Herman Husband

Herman Husband (1724–1795) was a radical, pacifist, pamphleteer, and preacher, who was best known in Western Pennsylvania as a leader and spokesman of the Whiskey Rebellion.

A true enigma.  For a pacifist, he is associated with a lot of violence.  Herman did not understand what his speech did to people.  It pushed them over the edge.

Herman brilliantly articulated the people's anger.  He gave it a righteous framework, but Herman had no control over the kinetic energy his framework unleashed.

Social Democracy Won the Century and Lost the Future

Social democracy transformed the 20th century by building inclusive welfare systems and empowering workers through reform rather than revolution, achieving remarkable equity in places like Sweden. Rooted in Marxist ideals but grounded in parliamentary politics, it tempered capitalism with strong unions, progressive taxation, and state intervention. Yet as economic pressures mounted, it retreated from challenging private ownership, embracing austerity and neoliberalism instead, abandoning its working-class roots and surrendering the vision of democratic control over wealth.

Excellent though really long article on the history of Socialism in Europe, particularly in Sweden.  The Swedes just elected a new socialist goobermint, which just barely kept thefar right Neo-Nazi party out of power.  Fascism is on the rise not just in the FSoA, but across Europe as well.
