Federal immigration agents shot and killed a woman on Minneapolis' southside. Watch the video, it is intense.
I wish I was there. I would have slashed tires. I can't believe Trump's fucking assholes stayed in the neighborhood after murdering a woman.
RE has met me in person, he can say if I would have used the folding shipping knife I keep in my pocket or not. Do I have the stones. I think I do. One hard pull on the sidewall and I'd be doing my part to give these Kristi Noem wankers a bad day. Better if two tires go flat.
In disgust we watched murder become normalized as Trump blew up fishing boats. But nobody did anything to stop the madness. Now Maduro is snatched for no good reason, and at least 40 people are killed in the kidnapping.

Will a sufficient number of Amerikans be outraged enough to get a big enough turnout at these vigils to get their CONgress Critters to show some backbone and actually start to push back against Trumpolini's Gestapo tactics?
How about starting with a petition stating that no one of any party will be voted for if they support ICE raids? How about demanding that ICE agents are not allowed to carry guns? They're not arresting people who are in the process of doing violent crimes. If someone is commiting a crime with a gun, they can call regular cops like everyone else.

Well....true. But....there is this issue. At some point in time, as the Diner began to notice that..no one else was noicing things like peak oil...it began to get politically oriented. And as that trnsition was made....folks pretty much...disappeared.

Personally, I think our low readership numbers have little to do with politics and much more to do with the fact Forums have gone out of style, in favor of the short attention span text of Social Media and no text at all video. We're also more difficult to find nowadays as Google's search engine prioritizes for pay websites that pay a fee for placement. In fact the whole newz oriented web has become almost entirely subscription paywall, most of the time I see only headlines and what I can read briefly before the link flips to a subscription sign up offer.
Anyhow, regardless of readership numbers or interest, the Diner mission remains the same, which is to track and record the progress of the collapse of industrial civilization. The fact is that collapse has now moved into a heavily politically driven phase as the world realigns itself to operate in the new reality of resource scarcity and the consequential resource wars. The battlegrounds in Ukraine, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, Greenland, Taiwan et al are all quite clear and mapped out, along with the domestic advancement of the Police State, deportations and blaatant racism. It would be just plain dumb to be hashing over Peak Oil when the rest of this shit is quite obviously the more clear and present danger.
If you wanna discuss Peak Oil, I suggest finding another website concerned with that. Here now, the rampant spread of fascist imperialism is the topic of greatest concern. Peak Oil is yesterday's newz.

Ask the people of Greenland waiting for Marines to come strolling up the beaches.
Since it hasn't yet reached your doorstep, it's not collapsy enough for you. You live in the belly of the beast, a member of a highly privileged minority. The collapse works its way inward from the periphery of the civilization to the core. Compare the state of the world and the disorder growing today to just 5 years ago, and you can see how rapidly it is moving. It won't stay out on the periphery forever.
Go to any major city in the FSoA and check out the Trumpvilles. They won''t be peaceful forever either.
That cheapens the entire concept of collapse across the board. Because now, humans have been, are, did it yesterday, collapsing since soon after Adam and Eve came along. Collapse in your scenario then isn't even "collapse", it is just a state of humanity. And the other giveaway is we don't talk about war much at all. If war is collapse then from the beginning of your posting back at peakoil.com you would have been talking about that. I don't recall that in your early hisory at all, Israeli's and Palestinians, endless wars of Africa, or anyone else. Not even nuke war as liklihood collapse. You talked about growing food, shooting it or fishing for it. Not because Anchorage was going to fight Wasilla for some contrived religious reason, or a dispute over where the border between the two political entities was, but because of "collapse" that involved lack of energy, or no more imported food supplies and MZBs trying to overrun those who had food, and people needing to cooperate and work as group to offset the more basic needs to survive as modern life came to an end for lack of something or another.
Environmentala collapse I get, makes sense. Peak oil was a poor idea, but had delightful near instant consequences. War is just.....war. Always has been, always will be. If you had said "global thermonuclear war" that would be different, because post global apocalyptic nuke stuff makes sense and is a distinct event. Your picture imagery was interesting. So in your "collapse" scenario, how far along are we, and when is the expected arrival at your imagery? Because everything burning to the ground seems more like the absolute end of things, as opposed to late stage capitalism....which could have begun turn of the century with the neocon resurgence. And in the quarter century since it began (presuming turn of the century and age of the NeoCons is a good start)....everything burning to ground (other than the usual natural disasters which cause such things) doesn't appear to be what is going on.
As far as the prosperity of the social middle class....how you doing K-Dog? You out on a street corner with a cup? Me neither. And as you have insisted that folks like you and I are in the middle, it seems like a fair question as to how we are faring this late stage capitalism world.

Clearly you didn't follow my blog very closely, evidenced by the fact also you didn't even know who Steve was or what he wrote about. I discussed war as an outcome and as a vector, civil war vs international war, conventional vs nuclear, proxy wars vs direct conflict, asymmetric warfare etc. War comes in many flavors, religious, economic, resource...hell even love and family disputes can cause wars. The really BIG wars however always center around empire building or empire destruction. WWII encompassed the restructuring of the Anglo-Aerican empire and the destruction of the 3rd Reich and empire of Japan. They were taking the point of view that the protesters are lazy unemployed loosers. I was taking the point of view that the ICE agents do not have a real job because causing people misery is not a real job. Yes they have money. But does being paid define a job? The protesters are serving the community and clearly working. That they work without pay shows that just getting money can't define a job because you can work for free.

It isn't about credibility so much, yours or anyone elses. All the early peakers (not you so much, you didn't ever lock down to hard on a date, it was more of a general thing to you it seemed like) screwed the pooch, some just more amusingly than others. Nate seems to have moved on, but still hosts some of the old suckers on his show.
Ron Patterson, Gail tends to play in just "energy" now...using the same arguments and similar graphs that she did at TOD, but with no better logic regardless. Just argument, from someone who's global peak oil is approaching a 20 year oopsy. Whipple died. Heinberg is reinventing the wheel as best he can and morphed into more eco...although recently I caught a whiff of him trying to recycle his nonsense again, trying to explain why he had been wrong....by now admitting what was obvious to those of us who didn't fall for it knew back then. Couldn't tell him that in the moment though, him being a good violin player pretending to be a geoscience polymath of some sort.

Far as changing ideas, when I began I wasn't interested in Peak Oil and energy at all. Just curiouss about the reasons behind the collapse of Bear Stearns and Lehman Bros. I ran across a paper by Antal Fekete that led toexploring the debt which led to energy costs which led to resource depletion. I spent more time on economics blogs than Peak Oil at the beginning, but PO was livelier back then. Lookking at long term effects, at first I was in the Amish preindustrial cam, eventually moving to the stonee age camp. Never bought into NTHE and Guy McDoomster theories.
As you collect more data and do more research, over 20 years your thinking has to evolve,otherwise you haven't learned anything.
Anyhow, I'm not going to die too soon, I just don't get why I deserve so much attention. Why waste the time? I have no credibility. Seems silly.

The number of data points certainly matters, but the temporal component can't be ignored, in terms of how, after decades, and with hindsight, their previous positions have evolved.
And as most have ghosted their audience and websites and whatnot (or been abandoned by their audience?), the data points are far fewer with increasinng longevity.

"Collapse" strikes me as a powerful word. My definition of long ago is we would know we were collapsing when ice became an issue, because it is a partial luxury, and common, and would become less common, particularly in places less able to have electricity and freezers operating to make it, and give it awy free in drinks.

He didn't buy land to grow trees to use as firewood, or an extra plot for a bigger garden or some chickens and hogs to slaughter himself to get through the next winter...nope....he bought a gizmo for be better for the environment. In the middle of collapse, seems like a weird priority, and hardly a rush back to simpler times.
As someone who once lived from season to season, I can assure you that a means of heating the house had NO consideration for its environmental friendliness. And I'm betting the temp he maintains in his house or that for you in the facility isn't what folks dredging out an existence would keep it at....we used a 50F setting on the funrnace before the propane furnance fired up. Kereosene heater in the living room to keep the living room and kitchen in the center of trailer high enough that the thermostat wouldn't kick on the furnance. This obviously didn't help out when it came to no running water because the pipes coming in from on end of the trailer froze and we had to haul water from the creek. But hey, we were all collapsed more than half a century ago living a simple life back then.
Maybe we all did collapse back then and we all cured it by moving to nicer places?
Certainly none of us live where we started out, so we CURED OURSELVES!!!! WOO HOO!

As I mentioned earlier, we have reached a point where we have a new crisis on practically a daily basis. There's so much mayhem ongoing out there now it's impossible to follow all of it and keep up. Information overload results in many important stories being missed or overlooked.
Currently, on the macro level there are 3 wicked problems that are leading goobermint toward failure here in the FSoA. Wicked problems are intractable with no politically palatable answers that polarize opinions resulting in legislative lockup. The rapidly growing homeless problem, the affordability crisis for the middle class and the immigration problems are affecting large numbers of people in many communities across the FSoA at the same time. None are soluble either by throwwing money at the or by dispatching militarized police to quell the mayhem. Trumpolini can send 3000 ICE Gestapo to Minneapolis, but he can't do that with Chicago, NYC, Portland, LA, SF etc all at the same time without invoking the Insurrection Act, and even then it's questionable there's enough personnel to handle the disorder on a national level. You can't control chaos when the numbers grow large and it's geographically spread out and not confined to a single location.
I do see a more generalized breakdown of law & order coming out of this with a rise in home invasions in wealthy neighborhoods and increased gang activity in low income neighborhoods. Possibly also a rise in kidnappings and assassinations of corporate executives along with sabotage of the internet, electric grid and oil production and distribution faciities. Berlin recently had their elecyricity knocked out for 3 days by sabotage.
A lot of this stuff is very difficult to track because it doesn't turn up in the news cycle except in the specific location where it happens. So you can't track the number of home invasions occuring nationally, for instance or the increases in gang violence. However, this would be consistent with everything I've observed about collapse as it has progressed in other countries, so I expect it here as well now.

Three reasonable mentions, and okay, let's call them "crisis".
Homeless problem has been here for quite some time, undoubtedly called a crisis by some spanning decades. How long does a crisis have to be occuring with no one really caring before we can decide it must not be a crsis, because otherwise we would do something about it. The affordability problem for the middle class? It is certainly a problem, seemingly intractable indeed, but hardly unsolvable. Well, maybe a small crisis or two in there. But there certainly is no current spate of corporate kidnapping and assassinations, sabotage of the internet, or folks attacking electric grids or oil production. And oil production is an EASY one, I can come up with half a dozen ways to screw that pooch. And folks have figured out how to bring down grids, the more interesting ones being tranformers at the right spot. Guess what? For as each as these two might be, you just don't see them happening let alone increasing to even the point of noticability.

This is not a matter of disagreeing with you, you may be right.
But, not all America is white and there is actually a remote possibility that legal structures could be set so guest workers can work in agriculture, landscaping, construction and then go home. ICE instead of deporting would process people to make sure they are documented.

I have no requirement at all for a collapse schedule. I only note that incessant claims of it happening, in the past, present or future, are a characteristic of the doomer genre. And religions in general. An interesting correllation itself. I note that collapse is a powerful background driver across nearly all doomer type topics. I only even paid it any attention when I identified it as such a common driver within my area of expertise. Across decades of pushing into the "why" people fell for peak oil, turns out it was an easy answer. It was easily configured to feed a collapse scenario. Much more effective in a modern, interconnected and "educated" world than just pitching The Book of Revelations to the rubes. Koresh and Jim Jones and Heavens Gaters were all doomers, and made such an excellent pitch that people sacrificed themselves to their ideas.
I have no schedule for "collapse" (quotes to designate RE's accepted definition) at all. I am happy to acknowledge that it has happened before (just ask the dinosaurs) and is required to happen again (the Sun is getting lighter by 40 million tons a second). Within these completely reasonable concepts (throw in a decent GRB to if you'd like) there are these biological organisms living in a thin layer of organic material on the 3rd rock from our particular G-type yellow dwarf star who will be goners one way or another. Humans just seem to have a fascination with the how, why and when, going back millenium. I mark this up to nothing more than a recognition of mortality, both at the individual and species level.
Arguing over collapse is like two fleas arguing about if they can hold their breath longer than the human can stay when they dive into a pond and swim underwater. Just fleas....along for the ride.....

As to when it actually began, that's not a bad question but difficult to put a single date on because there are so many different components. Also it has to wait until someone notices it, which comes after it's actually underway. Looking at environmental collapse for instance, Rachel Carson noticed it underway in the 60's, but it certainly began before that. It only really becomes visible in retrospect, and there has to be some time interval to see develop.
Since oil is such a big part of the energy aspect, you could peg the beginning to when the 2nd derivative of new discoveries turned negative. That would put it in the mid 1960s.
Just like a car that breaks down doesn't immediately stop or roll backwards, it begins to slow down first (in most situations), same is true for civilization collapse. Picking out the moment it began slowing can be tough as it's almost imperceptible. As it progresses it becomes more obvious. Now with industrial civilization it has become quite apparent, and has been so since the early 2000s for any who is not so blind they will not see.

Hubbert was able to figure out his contribution in advance (not his US 1950 peak oil claim which was just a warmup), so some folks don't need to wait until after the fact.
As far as retrospect in general, I assure you a continental sized basalt flow wouldn't require all that much time to see the results of. Not environmental, but it would certainly and easily cascade into environmental effects without any trouble. And how many of the collapse conditions listed in your definition are currently churning the world because of global discoveries of oil? You well understand supply/demand/price.....you see an oil price problem FINALLY arriving 65 years later....except....what are gas prices nowadays? I paid <$2/gal. People tried this one before, in 2008 when oil speculation early in that year created a peak price only 48 years after global discoveries did their thing. Will der Fuehrer Donolf Trumpler back his favorite Gestapo Barbie or throw her under the bus? Scapegoating her is likely the better choice politically since it does shift the blame for the recent murders to her from where it truly belongs, because she's obviously just carrying out policies he's totally in favor of and wanted to implement. The Donolf's narcissm & megalomania and fear of being perceived as weak and not totally in control may however lead to the less expedient choice. Particularly since the Demodopes have given him an ultimatum, which no wannabee Dictator can do and still maintain an iron grip on his authority.
