K-Dog, long time no see! I'm glad to hear that the Diner is still open for business. If you'd like to post the HTML link here, by all means.
I mentioned JMG today which cause me to visit his website, which caused me to leave a comment. And you know the rest.
A few days ago 'doomsteaddiner.com' expired while I was at work. By the time I got home the Men in Black Pants and White Shirts had snapped it up. I knew it would be expiring on the 28th a couple of months ago and wanted to get it back. Your tax dollars beat me to it.

Actually, I used DoomsteadDiner.net as my URL for most of the time the Diner was in operation. I used the .com url while I had it hosted on GoDaddy, but after getting in a disagreement with them I moved to A Small Orange and bought the .net url there. It was easier and quicker than getting the .com URL back from GoDaddy at the time.

I just checked and it says doomsteaddiner.com and .net .org are all available.
Did someone give the .com back in just a matter of days?

No they are not. They are available to be bought from someone else and it takes seventy dollars to start bidding for it. I would expect the actual price to be in the hundreds of dollars. But we won't ever know because if I can't get them for ten bucks which is what expired or unclaimed domains cost, then what we have will be just fine.

We might be able to help you get it.

The smiling face is from the Go-Daddy page. That is who I used to register chasingthesquirrel.com. Domain doomsteaddiner.org is also taken. That is only the broker service fee for the domains. The money I would eventually pay for the domains, to then become dark money for use by alphabet agencies would be much more I am sure.

doomsteaddiner.xyz is available for $2.99.
Plus a bunch of others. .us , .info, .co etc

Go Daddy still manages the chasingthesquirrel.com domain but I have changed who hosts the site twice.

It's a never-ending battle. I opened the Diner originally due to censorship on Yahoo Groups. They started deleting no-no words mainly, not really going after content and ideas at the time. I also wanted more control over graphical features and the "look" of the website. I did have to give up a few features I really liked. There was an interactive database users could add links to that you could search and a calendar for users to put important dates into such as conferences and protest actions. Peter, my original tech guy said he could create those for me, but he never got round to it. The solution we found of using both the Wordpress and Simple Machine Forum packages with some tweaks got most of what I wanted.
Later on, the Diner started running into problems of disappearing posts from the SMF, which I solved by paying for an auto-backup service. There were still issues with fake members and so forth, but overall it ran OK until I took it offline. The action has been similar here since we combined the Diner with Squirrel, perhaps a little more since it's both of us with our own detail of MIB that have followed us around over the years joining forces. lol.
Overall here as well, K-Dog has done a good job of keeping up with the various annoyances that crop up, which you really can never completely stop and still have a generally accessible website. Nature of the Beast in our current world.

Out of curiosity, why would it be worth $479 today? I just checked it for fun.
Because the men in black can sell it to themselves for $479. You can always sell something to yourself for lots of money. As much money as you have. When selling to yourself value is irrelevant.

Well..sure. But it's for sale...so the MIB don't have it. They didn't take it away from RE. The domain wholesaler types did, someone drops a domain, they scoop it up on the cheap on the bet that someone will want it, or want it back.
I've got a high up IT buddy working for a international telecom, he once consulted for a company that downsized, didn't want to pay renewal fees on a dozen domains, let them lapse, changed their mind when a big contract came in, buddy went back to claim the dozen back, same thing happened. Wanted various $$ amounts, with the ones that had been used the most demanding higher buyback. No need for MIB to explain what is now normal economic activity ruining what was once a good idea (the internet).

And when normal internet behavior related to buying/selling domains leads to the same result as happened to the Diner, what else you got for random GovCo malevolence?

You asked for an explanation, I gave you one.
A better explanation would require a budget.

You have certainly made a claim....but so did I....which relies on nothing but normal economic behavior on the part of a group that most closely resembles scalpers reselling concert tickets.

And I'll make another claim that even if I am paranoid as you clearly imply, as long as there is Epstein data floating around somewhere.
The Diner is reasonably safe from harassment.

We are still savin up for a quad RTX 6000 setup on a server board with a terabyte of high speed ram.
(https://static.bhphoto.com/images/multiple_images/images500x500/1724679226_IMG_2321871.jpg) $899.99 for the board, the processor and ram bring the cost up to about $20,000 and the RTX 6000 cards would be another $35 K. The Diner would have a 50K home with the capability to run a big boy LLM model at a very good token rate. Oh yeah !
Too bad all the Billionaires are conservative assholes.
I just bought doomsteadiner.com for 2 years. :)

The one I checked was the one you mentioned below. This was the one I noticed was higher priced than the others...like $400 or something.

When I checked the one you mentioned, there were another half dozen variations listed, and they were all normal cheap like the one you just listed.

You should grab all the cheap ones, and when anyone else notices doom and whatnot, do the reseller routine and make a mint!
DD.net is so expensive because of its history. It had a lot of traffic for years. That was my main URL.

I know. I quoted you saying about the same just a post or two back. Which is why my claim is that the internet domain scalpers know this about your domain as well, compared to the other URLS of similar words as your main one, and therefore charge more for it in the hopes that the person it has value to comes back. And then you get scalped.
As I mentioned, an IT buddy had the same issue, except it occurred across about a dozen domains. They were used variously, let go because the owner didn't want to pay for them anymore, but the owner of the company was then pissed because when his new web people went to recollect them for a new project, the scalpers/domain controllers were charging real money.
It is just business. No mackiavellian requirement. I got my first and still only domain at the end of the last century. It won't be going anywhere soon.
