We do. And we also know that it is no more an absolute than other pithy sayings or generalizations that attempt to simplify complex interactions.
How does the Upton quote apply to the specific situation I mentioned? My parents had reasons to go MAGA, and it wasn't because they are stupid (mom was as smart as I am pre-Alzheimers, stepfather was probably about average) or would even understand the Upton quote let alone if it applied to either of them or their work.
When I listen to some folks on the news, being interviewed with the usual version of "how could you have voted for....HIM!??, the answers aren't all those you get from nose picking backwoods hilljacks.
