It could be an improvement. A way to broaden your horizon.
I have heard the argument before. Primarily during high school when I lived in circumstances where quite a few of my friends thought it was a great way to spend some time. Drugs, booze, whatever. As might be expected I was the target of some ridicule for not participating. I can only volunteer that dad being a drunk and the consequences of it were something I expanded to include avoiding all types of drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, whatever.
Quote from: K-DogIt's much harder to be narrow-minded when you're busy trying to remember why you walked into the room in the first place and can't find the door.
It's much harder to be narrow minded when your co-workers/teachers across multiple fields of science are the best and brightest in the fiels and can be challenged into, and bested. This is done by learning what they know and using it in ways they never imagined. Certainty thorough understanding isn't being narrow minded. Certainty, proven out by future events, is just a consequence of NOT being narrow minded. It is just a consequence of applying a wide band approach to solving a problem others couldn't.

Possible I suppose. I certainly never started out with the idea to build a better mousetrap. Didn't even realize I was thinking outside of a box when I did it. It just seemed like...it made sense.
