Quote from: K-Dog on Mar 22, 2026, 07:50 PMWhen the Titanic struck the iceberg at the ship didn't immediately sink. Many passengers felt a slight jar and went back to bed. Sycophants on the upper decks carried on as if all was well. The lights stayed on, the band played, and the champagne was cold.
Indeed. But expand the time frame...allow it to cover the overarching concept of Apocalyticism, the category within which our decades of doomer experience resides within (if not centuries once religious collapsologists get involved) and the Titanic has been sinking since before you were born, before your parents were born, is still sinking, and all along the way, people have BELIEVED it will, and will die believing it. Collapse never having arrived, all along the way.
But it isn't any fun thinking of Apocalypticism instead of doom right around the corner is it?
It isn't a hobby. It isn't a cool frame work to hang websites around, without the time component, EXACTLY as you have framed it with the Titanic. DOOM IS HERE! YOU SUCKERS JUST DON'T KNOW IT! WE CLEVER FOLKS ARE IMBUED WITH KNOWLEDGE AND ARE TRYING TO WARN THOSE SMART ENOUGH TO BELIEVE AS WE DO!
Just don't mention todays doom is naught but one in a string claimed, predicted, pretended to be happening in the moment (peak oil 2005 comes to mind, Planet X is coming, Yellowstone is exploding) events. All of these are just examples on RE's websites, Apocalypticism goes back a millennium.
The Titanic angle doesn't work is someone knows any history on the overarching topic. It is no different than me using a GRB, that no one can see yet, but certainly might be coming, to do the same thing. And a GRB is FAR sexier. But hard to pitch something that hard to see...but you could try the Titanic angle for that doom the same way. And a GRB is WAY cool.
