Jessica makes a lot of good points, especially about the ceaseless valorization of the military. As I write this I'm watching Monday Night Football, and am reminded that this month is the NFL's "Salute to Service," several weeks of rubbing up against all things military, with coaches wearing specialty garments (available for purchase, of course, at your favorite team's online store) Cue the Blue Angels overflight.
Nothing has changed since Smedley Butler realized that war is a racket. Nearly 90 years later, it's just a bigger racket, designed to protect American capital.
