I do not want to see the video.

I get upset every time I hear 'Danger Zone' over the radio.  Military recruitment and the normalization of combat.  Combining pop-rock with military hardware produced "militainment." Upbeat, catchy hooks to celebrate state sponsored violence as a heroic coming-of-age story.  And that is what the video is supposed to do.

"Take the Oil"?  How?

First off, even if the Jarheads manage to storm the cliffs without being massacred, the Iranians have no doubt already booby-trapped all the storage tanks and will blow up everything themselves before they let them take the oill there.  2nd, the amount stored there is only enough to fill a few tankers and needs to be constantly replenished from oil still underground inside Iran.  3rd, even if they could get that oil, they still couldn't ship it out until they get control of the entire north coast where the IRGC has their missiles and boat and submersible launch points.

Trumpolini's strategic thought process never got past playing Cowboys & Indians at Kindergarten recess.  He has now upped the deployment to around 50,000 while still maintaining he doesn'tt plan to use them.  WTF believes that?  Not the Iranians, that's for sure.  Meanwhile, the IRGC has around 180,000 active troops dug in on home soil.  Even if all the Jarheads are Rambo & Dutch, they're not gonna mow them all down in a 2 hour movie.  It would take months at best, and by the time it was over all that would be left of the infrastructure would be rubble.  All the pumping facilities would need to be rebuilt, which would take years.

I do not agree with his analysis.  Iran does not want to lose Iranians just to get Americans.  As strategy keeping an enemy out of your borders is a good idea.  Iran has defensive weapons to keep the invasion from happening.  Missiles and drones.  They will use them before they kill their young men.  Iran cares about life more than whoever wrote this article does.  The author has a western warbucks attitude.

Targeting desalinization plants is a war crime, besides which if they hit the Iranian ones, the Iranians will hit the Saudi, Omani, Kuwaiti & UAE ones.  No oil at all would flow since all the oil workers would be dying of thirst after about a week.

It would not be a war crime if Iran were ready to meet basic thirst requirements.  Iran takes out the desalination plants and then informs the Americans they have to leave immediately as their presence prevents Iran from meeting the basic thirst requirements of the Gulf states. 

Which Iran then shows the world they are ready to do.  Then the US has to counter by supplying water for millions itself, and that sidelines the invasion.  Trucking water for thirst would only be a few million gallons a day.  It would be a logistical nightmare for the US.  But not so much for Iran. 

Taking out a desalination plant would not be a war crime if you stand ready to provide water for basic needs.

If all the desal plants are bombed, where do they get the water from?  Fly it in from Russia?  Millions of bottles of water?  Daily? I don't think so.  Not a good plan.

Gallipoli: The Original "Force the Strait" Disaster

For those who do not know the history:

In 1915, Winston Churchill (then First Lord of the Admiralty) proposed a naval campaign to force the Dardanelles Strait—a narrow, 61-kilometer waterway connecting the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. The objective was to capture Constantinople (Istanbul), knock the Ottoman Empire out of World War I, and open a supply route to Russia.

The plan: Send British and French battleships up the strait. Suppress the Ottoman coastal forts with naval gunfire. Clear the mines. Sail through to Constantinople.

What happened:

    The Ottomans had laid mines in the strait.
    The Allied naval bombardment failed to destroy the mobile artillery batteries.
    Several battleships struck mines and sank.
    The navy withdrew, having failed to force the strait.

So the Allies tried a ground invasion instead. They landed troops on the Gallipoli Peninsula—the rugged, hilly terrain on the northern side of the strait.

I have a go-to Republican who answers these questions.  I checked in with his channel when I got home from work today.  I like him, and he is smart not to take the politics too far.

But he is about saying the Iranians have no right to close the straight.  He uses the excuse that he is a 'shipping guy,' and the sea must be free.  Which at this point I find weak.  Now that the US is doing the same thing that Iran is doing, I did not hear any protest from him.  He does sort of admit though, that all bets are off in war.  My humble opinion is Iran can do anything they fucking want to do if it stops bombs from falling on them.

Actually, it doesn't deny the world oil, because the Iranians will let the Chinese ships pass through, and the FSoA ships blockading aren't in the straight, they are in International Waters in the Gulf of Oman.  The only way to stop those ships is to interdict them at sea and board them.  The Chinese have already said they won't allow that, and I seriously doubt Trumpolini would have the cojones to do that and risk a war with the Chinese.  He's a bully who likes to push around the weak, not a real tough guy who will go into a fair fight.

The actual number of ships which will go thru will remain tiny until the insurance companies can assess the risk with confidence and set a price for the insurance.  That won't happen with a cease fire, only with an actual Peace Treaty.

One wonders what a "strong" response to the blockade & piracy would be?  Will they attempt an attack on an FSoA Navy boat?  That would seem to be pretty hard to succeed at, given they are hanging out well outside the straight in International Waters in the Gulf of Oman.  Failing at the attack would make them look weak & give Trumpolini opportunity to boast about his powerful navy and Poseidon like omnipotence over the sea.

So, either they have to be pretty certain they can succeed with such an attack, or choose something pretty  substantial that at least makes impressive video to substitute.    Blowing up a major Saudi or Kuwaiti refinery or storage facility would make pretty spectacular video if they could manage that, but also pretty tough I imagine.  Maybe the Houthis could manage an attack on an LNG transport of their coast?  One of those blowing up would really make good video.

How about a big terror bombing in Europe or in the FSoA?  That could backfire with negative PR if a lot of civilians get waxed.  It needs to be something that attacks infrastructure, not people.  A cyber attack on the FSoA electrical grid or the banking system could work, if they have hackers good enough to pull it off.
