Robber barons are nothing but an example of something that the US needed to handle back in the day because they were detrimental to the country at large. Oligarchs in today's environment are simply the modern version. The old robber barons accomplished things, at the expense of individual happiness and wealth and whatnot. The modern oligarchs/robber barons are no different, either in methods or the consequences of their actions.
Your intellectual bias is severe, in that if you believe something (a person of your intelligence knowing everything and all) it must be true because hey!, it was you who thought it!
I don't hero worship robber barons any more than I do human scum-bags like Elon. But I do recognize the accomplishments, and sometimes accompanying issues, of both.
The bolded part makes RE's critique valid. You mean to say they meant well and had hearts of gold. Seems pretty obvious to me. And gold they did have. They all do love the gold! As much as they can get.
