Quote from: RE on Jul 04, 2024, 01:11 AMCloser to 95, since the Great Depression didn't start until around 1930.  The stock market crashed in 1929, but the Depression took a little while to really get rolling.  Also, just because none have been as bad since doesn't mean this one won't be WORSE than the GD.  There was tons of oil in the ground ready to dig up and do a reboot after WWII.  This time, after WWIII finishes, nothing left to kick start with.  An endless, eternal Depression, and Age of Darkness. The Grapes of Wrath will seem like a Picnic by comparison.

That article was written from the point of view of this is what we want to say so lets cherry pick.  A serious reader will spot the bullshit.  But the author does not care about serious readers any more than the blunderbuss of Nigerian email scams do.  It is all about volume and hooking a fish.  The author starts with
Quoteinterest rates – which usually decelerate economic activity – have remained high for far longer than expected.

But:

The average 30-year fixed rate reached an all-time record low of 2.65% in January 2021 before surging to 7.79% in October 2023. In 2024 so mortgage rates have been hovering close to the 7% mark.  In the '80s, the interest rate was 13%!" Mortgage rates were 18.63% in October 1981.  Today's mortgage rates are on par with what homeowners have paid in the past.

This nimrod thinks the post-bailout economy is normal.

The Trump-Musk slash & burn approach to "draining the swamp" of the federal goobermint bureaucracy plays really well with his MAGA-otts followers, but it totally ignores the consequences of the havoc it is creating, which takes a while to play out.  On the surface, goobermint spending is only part of the total GDP, but in every area if you go 2 or 3 levels deep into the subcontractors and the subsidies, as well as the money spent by the workers who are being fired, it touches every area of commerce going on.  The confusion is inevitably going to resulting breaks in the supply chain with totally unpredictable results.

How long it will take for things to start to really unravel is an open question, but I suspect a year from now the consequences of the ongoing massacre will be evident even to his faithful followers.  How things play out with the economy in the toilet will be quite interesting to be sure.

Sounds bad. Not as bad as The Great Dieoff, but still. A bad recession. I seem to recall 2008 being the last bad one, some might refer to it as the "best stock and market fund tracking investment event of our old geezer lifetimes".

Do any of us old geezers want to speculate on how we are going to protect our wealth now, in order to jump back in on the far side to add some more cash to our piles?

Stock market today: Dow sinks 900 points, Nasdaq plunges 4% in worst day since 2022

US stocks plunged on Monday.

Do you need a reason or can you figure it out?  I'll say something to do with the political dumpster fire.

QuoteConsumer spending unexpectedly fell in January, according to the Commerce Department. Shoppers pulled back far more than economists expected: Spending fell 0.2% for the month. Adjusted for inflation, spending sank 0.5%. Those are the biggest monthly declines since February 2021.

Everywhere I look the news is the same.  Admission of problems dismissed in happy talk.

QuoteThe American economy is diverse and remains the envy of the world — particularly at a time when industrial powers like Germany are seriously struggling, and other economies are coping with significantly higher and much stickier inflation than America.

Eat your veggies, somebody used to go hungry in China.

OK, add RECESSION to raising health care costs, sparking inflation with tariffs, starting a useless war in Vz and covering up the PedoFiles and come November you have a recipe for the Repugnants getting SLAUGHTERED at the polls with fair elections.  Which means...no way in HELL will there be fair elections run in 2026.

Expect ICE to be at every polling station and NG troops marching around cities to frighten immigrants away from voting.  Expect lawsuits claiming election tampering anywhere a demodope wins.  Expect the Speaker to refuse to seat newly elected demodopes.  If necessary, expect a possible FALSE FLAG major terrorist event followed by cancellation of the elections.

All this assuming WWIII hasn't already begun in earnest with the Chinese invading Taiwan and the Ruskies taking over Iran to stop anarchy after the collapse of the theocracy. Mayhem throughoutt Africa with Civil Wars and the AI bubble goes POP on Wall Street.

OKJ, probably ALL those things won't happen, but enough so that fair elections are virtually impossible.  This will not end well.

QuoteTo frighten immigrants away from voting.

I'm sure that is what they will say if asked.

but it is a :

Mussolini, Napoleon, Hitler - They were not going senile.  With Trump the dice are rolling.  Trump's brain is leaking out his ears.  Trump could have his personal Stalingrad at any time.

* Karma is a bitch Trump should not have said all that he did about Joe Biden.  What goes around comes around.
