Fun argument. I understand. I think the Doc says this in the article. He says something like "if the decision as being made consciously or unconsciously it doesn't matter. We are killing our host at a metastasized rate."

I read that line, but even if it's unconscious, that still implies there is some collective decision making process going on somewhere.  There isn't.  There are only actions and consequences of actions.  We burn FFs because we have to in order to keep feeding 8B people.  We have to keep the air conditionerson in Phoenix, because in 130F heat everybody there would die by the end of summer.  Relocating the entire city isn't very feasible either, since we already are short of affordable housing anywhere you don't need the HVAC on 24/7.  Nobody has made an unconscious decision to keep Phoenix where it is, there is no decision to be made.  Some individuals with CFS have decided to leave Phoenix and others lacking in CFS continue to move there, but there is no species wide decision being made about Phoenix.  Phoenix will continue to exist as long as electricity is flowing to the air conditioners.  After that, Phoenix will cease to exist.  No decision necessary.

Once HS has finished the job of recycling all the waste carbon into the atmosphere, most of the individual recycling machines will themselves be recycled.

Life has evolved to the point where dead matter is fully recycled by microbes. 

At times in the past, plants died and fell into an anaerobic environment where bodies just piled up.  The carbon eventually was locked into kerogen until a rock overburden became thick enough for the temperature to rise.  At elevated temperatures kerogen becomes gas and oil. 

As we don't have much in the way of anaerobic environments, microbes decompose most dead matter and free carbon that is extracted from the atmosphere.  Volcanoes can supply extra CO2 as they have in the past when volcanic CO2 caused mass extinctions.  People are as unnecessary as mosquitos.

But our new royalty won't care about EROEI.  They will have slaves to get their energy.  Maybe 20,000 each?

As an experienced doomer -> I will NOT predict SHTF when America passes peak shale oil.  Previous oil crisis has taught us that existing arrangements are maintained with surprising vigor.  Plenty of the almost creative type shine, when it comes to imitating existing arrangements.  With the almost creative types  outnumbering the innovativly creative by a 10:1 ratio, existing arrangements will be maintained.

On the upside, in the future only slaves will have to walk.

A trillion barrels of oil equivalent will keep the 1% on top for a few hundred years.  A 2016 estimate of global deposits set the total world resources of oil shale equivalent of 6.05 trillion barrels (962 billion cubic metres) of oil in place.

Northern latitudes will resemble French Guiana.  With their tropical diseases, but without their jungle.

* oil produced from oil shale is not the same as fracked oil or gas.  Kerogen must be heated to create oil and gas.

Shale Oil is an inferior fuel, but since that is all humanity will have for cheap energy, it will be used.  Slaves with skill will inject hydrogen into the kerogen cracking process to fossil fuel yield.

The current environment is not the same as what the future environment will be.  New anaerobic environments form as new layer of sediment are deposited, sealing off lower layers from the atmosphere.  If things over the next Billion years remained the same as over the last Billion, you would end up with new pools of fossil fuels.  Sadly, over the next 300M years or so, the Sun will burn up most of the Hydrogen and begin fusing  the Helium that has been formed from fusing Hydrogen and will begin emitting higher levels of radiation, making life on the surface of the earth impossible.  Life will persist in the oceans a while longer, until they boil off, and the atmosphere will be blown off as the Sun goes Red Giant.  This will leave behind a hunk of rock with no trace left we were ever here.

The lifespan of Homo Sap on this planet has always had an end date, all that is happening now is we are probably making it shorter.  Sort of like a smoker shortens his likely lifespan.  You also could be hit by a car, or the planet could get hit by an asteroid.  Eventually everything dies, the most you can get is very old first.  That seems unlikely now.  I give Homo Sap to the Year 2525.
