Spain: Massive protests after housing bills voted down

Tens of thousands across Spain protested against unaffordable housing and evictions after parliament rejected emergency rent protections, with major demonstrations in Madrid and violent clashes in Valencia. Protesters denounced political inaction, demanding urgent reform as public frustration grows and the prime minister considers a snap election to address the crisis.

The fundamental problem is that Capitalism is incapable of providing Affordable Housing for people with incomes near or below the Poverty Line in a given market.  The better the area is for finding employment that will pay a higher salary, the more Rentiers will charge for living in that neighborhood.  The wealth generated in the neighborhood by commerce gets extracted by those who own or build & sell the housing.  The highest profit margin comes from building houses for the highest earrners and as geographical space gets scarce through growth of the population, the low income population is squeezed out of the market.

The problem has been growing incrementally since the 1980s and reached a crisis ppoint in the last decade.  The only solution now is a massive public works program to build new housing with prices tied to the income level of poverty level people, but this has been perpetually opposed by the industry as too Socialist.  The question now is if there is sufficient popular support to overcome the Rentier political power.  Then comes the problem of how to finance it and where to build it.

Obviously, this isn't just a problem in Spain, it's systemic through all the industrialized countries.  Depending on how much success they have there, it should spread to other countries.  It has the potential at least to recharge a genuine Workers movement on an international basis.

An AI boom is sending San Francisco rents through the roof: ‘Nowhere left for people to go’

“This is San Francisco on repeat,” said Quintin Mecke, executive director of the San Francisco Council of Community Housing Organizations, “We treat housing like a commodity rather than a home that people have a right to, and we don’t learn any lessons.

A perfect example of why there is a global housing crisis and why Capitalism fails the fundamental obligation of a society to provide shelter for its members.

Did the AI Boom all off a sudden raise the costs of the owners of the buildings so they have to charge more?  No, once the Workers start making more money, the Owners raise the rents to extract more profit from them.  Even if you are one of the lucky ones making the Big Boom salaries, you lose the money as fast as you make it to the Rentiers.  For the people NOT making the big bucks, they're left literally out in the cold.

Until this model is destroyed, housing will remain a social crisis.  Sadly neither party has the balls to Nationalize the RE industry and build housing with the prices fixed to the cost of building it, not to a speculative market.
