Great idea. Never happen. The oligarchs obviously won't allow it. Both democans and republicrats would fight it tooth and nail.

RE

The money piles already invested will prevent that from happening.  As much as I like it, and I do, your solution is a lawsuit in the making.  You have to nationalize it to make current investors whole, and then immediately stop new data centers and mothballs those near completion using only what is needed now (to be decided by the national board).

It would force companies to spend their own money developing in house, which would make for a much better system.  As it is now ALL the agenic software is TOTALLY INSECURE.  Token use is counted and every prompt goes up to the tech bro monopoly, and every token is visible.  All the AI companies see EVERYTHING you do.  The asses are talking about how their own AI could be dangerous, while they watch everything everybody does.

Input tokens can't go into an LLM or come out of it without being seen.  It is impossible unless you have a total monopoly and promise you won't do any looking at the tokens before you process them.  You only count them.  That could be part of their plan.  Assert themselves as the one and only moral authority as they plunge America into the unknown.  If we don't control it there is no way it can be kept safe they will say.  And they all smile good.

As the money passes under the table the verdict will be.  Yes tech bros are fine upstanding Americans, and as our new royalty they promise to keep your secrets safe.  It is a new social contract.  Nothing to worry about.

Perhaps this little undisclosed fact that we can read all the tokens we charge you for has something to do with the pious smokescreen the bros now fart out.

Leading AI experts warn unchecked ‘intelligence explosion’ could lead to ‘catastrophic’ outcomes

Leading AI researchers caution that accelerating automation may spark a rapid intelligence explosion, threatening human control over advanced systems. They call for urgent government measures to evaluate automation levels, enforce independent audits, and create oversight before it is too late, warning of severe consequences such as societal collapse or existential risk.

I was under the impression they all wanted the SINGULARITY.  Does the Halloween season change their minds?

An excellent explanation of what really happened.
A good description of agents too.

RE

Of course, I know it won't happen.  However, an Open Source AI available free to everyone like LINUX which is just as good or better than the ones being charged for could undercut their financial model also.  The Chinese also might offer up at least much cheaper options.

To an extent this is already happening, which is why the price of tokens has been dropping and why financiers are getting nervous about the ROI.  Thus another reason for the safety scare and having goobermint control and licensing.  I think it's going to be very difficult to make a profit on because there is no Patent type protection on the technology.  No patent, no monopoly, basically anybody can pitch their hat in the AI ring.

RE

Yes,

What the Diner has is good enough, and it only took $10,000 to get there.  This is why a RTX5090 card which I can only dream about now costs $7000 when it should cost $2000.  The 'chip shortage' is artificial and directly intended to benefit the billionaire bros and the capitalist rent model.  Late stage fun and games.

Independent users have to be kept to a minimum for the bros to make bank.

RE

$7000 is still pretty low as a bizness investment.  Lots of entrepreneurs could afford that.  You don't need a $Trillion$ IPO.

Can you outline "good enough"? Can I ask it to build python code to do specific tasks with proprietary information, including the stochastic modeling component? Scrape websites for all posts from a given user, put it in some organized fashion? Collate all research material on the web on a particular technical angle I need references for? Search the internet across my 5 favorite news sources and build me a summary? (Didn't Surly1 do something like that years ago? Collapse Chronicles? He still does it, and it is pretty good stuff).

He still does, and he is aware that he is a contributor and moderator here.  He also has never had time to read all the articles to generate a complete summary, nobody does.  That is where a clean honest Diner generated description adds something new to what Surly, and others, and myself have done previously.  And something which you cannot be trusted to do.

Indeed, and Collapse Chronicles is prominently linked on top of this page in a rotating banner.  As you know.

Your claim of "trust" is just a polite way of saying anyone  outside your approved political lane should be dismissed on sight. While one of the most common angles in the blogger doom-o-sphere, you can surely do better than just run of the mill politics.

Can't say I had any clue. So batting for 0 for 2 so far. I collect his doomer scroll on reddit where he posts it to the golbal collapse reddit he and RE did for awhile. This reddit is from WAY  back in the day when Elon and Tesla were supposedly going out of business, rather than building more cars, that he then launched on rockets...to Mars. Still waiting for the bankruptcy filing as predicted by those of correct political leanings...but it is reddit. They have also completely rearranged peak oil into lack of demand and no more doom involved. Talk about boring and tame.

When their intent is evil, absolutely.

There is no excuse for you not to know that Surly is linked on the top of the page.  Is this your way of trying to pull on me what they tried to do to Jack Smith?  That would be so if I let your oversight pass.

Hawks or Hawkeyes? Eric Schmitt’s Jack Smith grilling runs into basketball mix-up

Senator Eric Schmitt mistakenly accused special counsel Jack Smith of attending an Atlanta Hawks basketball game, confusing it with a University of Iowa Hawkeyes game against Maryland that Smith actually attended. The mix-up emerged during a Senate hearing, where Smith denied being in Atlanta or meeting Georgia prosecutors, prompting Democrats to demand an apology. The error highlighted a broader Republican effort to question Smith’s conduct and alleged coordination with local prosecutors investigating former President Trump.

“Deep Unlearning”: Timnit Gebru on AI Hype, Ethics & Algorithmic Racial Bias

Timnit Gebru critiques artificial intelligence for perpetuating societal biases through data rooted in Western and male-dominated perspectives. She underscores the environmental and financial costs of large models and the exploitation of global labor in data labeling. Through Black in AI and DAIR, she champions inclusive tech development and resists the industry’s relentless pursuit of scale without ethical consideration.

I have no evil intent. Never have. My clinical observation of folks who have interesting..... perspectives....has been discussed before. I haven't thought of the title to any paper I might write some day when I'm bored...don't know if it should lean peak oilers specifically, or the doomer niche at large. <shrug> I've got a to-do list that will last until I die, who knows if it rises in priority or not.

As for Surly, I pay no attention to your front page, I just beam in to the forum. I have SEEN your front page, the only thing of note was the CO2 tracker, I liked that. But the rest of it? Wild color schemes, topics of minor interest at best and seemingly a unidirectional doom scroll. Sort of like Surlys I guess. I prefer his organization of it is all.

THIS PAGE
, look at the top of this pay and refresh a few times.  There are only a few banners in rotation, 4 or 5.  And you have watched this page load at least 100 times.

So it appears you are a robot who just busted yourself.  No tokens for you.

Good to know! You are not real.

'Things may get ugly': Meta's new AI Muse is about to make the internet more annoying

Meta’s new AI agent Muse aims to automate daily tasks but may overwhelm digital systems through unchecked activity, disrupting businesses, exhausting resources, and exploiting users via flawed security and hidden data practices. With no regulatory framework in place, its unchecked autonomy threatens privacy, fuels competition for limited goods, and leaves society unprepared for an internet dominated by autonomous machines.

NOTE TO ALL READERS, DO NOT USE THESE THINGS.  They are 50% spyware and 50% code and they may be altogether too good at spending your money for you.

I am writing one from scratch without any spyware and the process involves reverse engineering a few agent codebases.  It will of course run on the video cards only.  No data centers.  I have been crunching on the code for days.

And oh my stars what I have seen.

* As an FYI feature I will track input and output token count and 'charge' myself at the lowest going rate. ($2 for a million input and $12 for a million output tokens.)  Then on the Open Paw agent dashboard I will be able to see the money I am not having to pay our royal born tech overlords.
