What Comes After the Protests

The killing of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis will continue to bring people to the streets. Can it bring change?

Quote from: RE on Jan 16, 2026, 10:44 AMAs I mentioned earlier, we have reached a  point where we have a new crisis on practically a daily basis.

So now you need a reasonable definition of "crisis". Particularly if you want to stack a bunck of them together to get to "collapse". Idiot politicians doing idiot things could be a crisis....depending on your definition. But we can name plenty of "crisis" going back before you and I were born....remember Rosa Parks and the reaction? Me neither, not old enough to notice. How about The Little Rock Nine? Crisis worthy of tearing the country apart. But doesn't really get to collapse much.

Quote from: REThere's so much mayhem ongoing out there now it's impossible to follow all of it and keep up.  Information overload results in many important stories being missed or overlooked.

Well, information overload is a condition of the internet being available, pumping out everything from bullshit nonsense to good opinions, informed or otherwise, people confusing opinions with fact and suckering in god knows how many..remember peak oil? Yeah, me neither....rarely get a call nowadays.

Quote from: RECurrently, on the macro level there are 3 wicked problems that are leading goobermint toward failure here in the FSoA.  Wicked problems are intractable with no politically palatable answers that polarize opinions resulting in legislative lockup.  The rapidly growing homeless problem, the affordability crisis for the middle class and the immigration problems are affecting large numbers of people in many communities across the FSoA at the same time.

Three reasonable mentions, and okay, let's call them "crisis".

Homeless problem has been here for quite some time, undoubtedly called a crisis by some spanning decades. How long does a crisis have to be occuring with no one really caring before we can decide it must not be a crsis, because otherwise we would do something about it. The affordability problem for the middle class? It is certainly a problem, seemingly intractable indeed, but hardly unsolvable. More like....the pressure applied by those being affected by it doesn't amount to enough pressure on the powers that be. Yet. As far as immigration, I'll make you a bet. That when the next Democan gets back to being President, maybe the rules that the Orange one are inventing on the fly will be kept. Maybe with some small modifications to pretend to be nicer. But most will be kept. Because Americans do seem to back some form of restriction of non white, non-Christian, non "like us" whatever. Call it....Americans don't mind xenophobia in small doses?

Quote from: REYou can't control chaos when the numbers grow large and it's geographically spread out and not confined to a single location.
True. But then you call it a revolution. And they come in small or big sizes...and then maybe that takes care of some of the "political intractability" issue.

Quote from: REI do see a more generalized breakdown of law & order coming out of this with a rise in home invasions in wealthy neighborhoods and increased gang activity in low income neighborhoods.  Possibly also a rise in kidnappings and assassinations of corporate executives along with sabotage of the internet, electric grid and oil production and distribution faciities.  Berlin recently had their elecyricity knocked out for 3 days by sabotage.

Well, maybe a small crisis or two in there. But there certainly is no current spate of corporate kidnapping and assassinations, sabotage of the internet, or folks attacking electric grids or oil production. And oil production is an EASY one, I can come up with half a dozen ways to screw that pooch. And folks have figured out how to bring down grids, the more interesting ones being tranformers at the right spot. Guess what? For as each as these two might be, you just don't see them happening let alone increasing to even the point of noticability.

Quote from: REA lot of this stuff is very difficult to track because it doesn't turn up in the news cycle except in the specific location where it happens.

And because the effects are so small, as in, NYC ain't lost its lights lately has it? Has the EIA tracked a spate of dropping oil or gas production because of sabotage that I've missed? Because if it mattered, folks should be able to see it in the data.

Quote from: RESo you can't track the number of home invasions occuring nationally, for instance or the increases in gang violence.

Because....no one is reporting these crimes to the police, or because no one is tallying them up?

Quote from: REHowever, this would be consistent with everything I've observed about collapse as it has progressed in other countries, so I expect it here as well now.
RE

Oh....so some of these items were straight up spculative? Well....you've been in the doom business since the last century....and we're still waiting for effects from other countries to get around to appearing here?

I'll stick with my ice analogy. Simple, easy to track, has all sorts of your signals mixed into it because of one simple metric, and no need to explain...only need to wait for it to happen and travelers bitching about "gee why can't we find ice anymore when out and about" and we'll know.

I am posting the MLPS clips on our server because the idea that once 'it gets on the internet' it is there forever is total bullshit.

Ok, I clicked on the video, and it played about 25 seconds and then stopped. An SUV, some guy walking around the back of it..and that is about where it stopped. Local technical issue, MIB, etc etc?

So....there was something beyond 25 seconds and it just didn't work because it is on your server?

Quote from: K-Dog on Jan 17, 2026, 08:51 AMHere the author is interviewed.

When I was being gang stalked it stopped when I started leaving my phone at home.  Before that there was a man or woman in shiny black pants wearing a shirt bleached so white it hurt my eyes waiting for me wherever destination I was going to.

So this statement comes from the video and author, or is this a personal comment? The capitalization would appear to indicate personal experience?

Stick with whatever you like.  If you had been alive in Nero's time, you would have denied Rome was collapsing while the fires burned and the barbarians sacked the city.  "Cities burn all the time!  They're built from wood!  We'll rebuild!"

This is not a matter of disagreeing with you, you may be right.

But, not all America is white and there is actually a remote possibility that legal structures could be set so guest workers can work in agriculture, landscaping, construction and then go home.  ICE instead of deporting would process people to make sure they are documented.

But that is wishful thinking because like a cat on a hot tin roof migration has long been part of the collapse lexicon.

Burning Rome to the ground certainly was the collapse of Rome. It wasn't the collapse of the Roman Empire.

Guess what? No one has burned down a single US city, let alone enough of them to cause the effects listed in your definition of collapse.

I understand that you have been a collapse enthusiast from way back. After waiting for it probably all of this century, your only response is really only "just wait". We have been. For as long as you have argued at peakoil.com that your reason for going to Alaska was for how wonderful it would work out in the coming collapse. As I have said before, and you are pretty much a poster child for, our (you, me, Dog and maybe another reader or two) group is more likely to see a personal end than be knocked off by collapse, as per your definition.

Interesting. And you confronted any of these people and asked who they were or why you were being followed, or the presumptive proof was the correlation between cell phone presence and these snappily dressed people showing up?

Reply from K-Dog :

Three Conversations.  There were cover stories.  I was given a web address to visit that downloaded a virus when I visited there.  The virus triggered security because it 'phoned home' when it was plugged into a computer behind a City of Seattle firewall.  Mrs. Dog had two people from IT at her desk within 5 minutes.  I gave the copy of the website to her for safekeeping asking her to take it to work.

At the time this was all very significant to me.  The passage of years has told me that none of this matters.

I went somewhere I was not supposed to go and learned things that 'Operational Security' did not want revealed.  As I was not subject to any security agreement the only way to silence me was to fuck with my head.

And collapse should adhere to your personal schedule why?

Collapse is inherent in the material conditions of our civilization.  The physics of these conditions determines how, and how fast collapse will play out.  It is certainly not subject to our whims.

Bear Stearns collapsed in March 2008, so not all of the new millenium. 17 years 10 months.

I'm not saying "just wait".  I am saying it's "in progress".  Picking up speed now also.

Garrison Gibson, a Liberian man, was arrested after agents used a battering ram to bust into his home last weekend. A federal judge ordered ICE to release Gibson on Thursday, which it did, only to arrest him again on Friday. He was then released again.

"I'm just scared to go outside. I'm scared of them," said Daisy Martinez, whose husband Tomas Martinez Gregorio was arrested on New Year's Eve in the suburb of Brooklyn Park. The couple had been pulled over by agents while driving their six-year-old son to the hospital for a tonsillectomy. While her son was in the backseat, multiple agents pinned her to the car and took Tomas. "It's almost as if he was kidnapped," she said.

Now Martinez said she's unsure every day what to tell her son – who has started to see a therapist to help him cope in the aftermath of what he's witnessed. "He does tell me that he doesn't want to go to school," Martinez said. "He doesn't want me to be taken away too."

How often does this have to occur before you can say democracy and civil rights are collapsing?  How many armed masked men roaming the streets disappearing brown people does it take?

At lunchtime, one of the only restaurants open on East Lake was an American diner. At least four Mexican restaurants in that block had been shut, indefinitely.

Approximately 80% of immigrant-run businesses in Minneapolis and St Paul had been closed this week amid the ICE crackdown, and sales at these businesses had plummeted since late December.

One has to wonder how hotels and restaurants in MPLS can continue to function.  Maids,  Dishwashers, Janitors etc in the hospitality biz are just about all immigrants.  What's the effect on the GDP & tax revenue?

File this under the smartphone video is mightier than the tear gas and rubber bullet?😒

Somehow I have a feeling that UToob videos will not dissuade Il Duce Trumpolini from terrorizing every Demodope controlled sanctuary big shity.  More likely it has the opposite effect of his doubling down on the tactics, sending EVEN MOAR masked thugs and authorizing EVEN GREATER amounts of gratuitous violence.  Which as this article explicitly states may end up instigating the CIVIL WAR he obviously wants.  Face it: the Trumpenator racism is so virulent that merely deporting brown people won't satisfy him.  He won't be happy until there are mountains of brown meat packages being stuffed into body bags.👿

One can only hope enough Repugnant CONgress Critters will join with the Demodopes to get Impeachment rolling before the elections.  Probability of things staying peaceful long enough for them to even be held grows slimmer by the day.

Yes, the ample warnings to protesters 'you haven't learned' means that more ICE cretins will soon be getting their bag limit.

We have gone from standing on the border being probable cause to search and seize to the country even having a border being probable cause to search and seize.  Logic creep.

And using the same nonlinear Venn diagram, presidential immunity has been extended downstream to the president's thugs.

Why?  BECAUSE WE HAVE NEVER HAD A SUPREME COURT WITHOUT RACISTS, THAT'S WHY.

The motto for the current supreme court should be 'give an idiot a horse and fools will ride'.  This is a legal principle that normal and balanced people are very aware of.  But, as white people can do no wrong, our Supreme Court is fine with fools doing what they do.

Our Supreme Court uses more sophisticated logic.

Trump is B.  A is Kristi Noem and all her thugs.  Since A is owned by B all the properties of B must extend to A.

If you can understand this logic, and have deep roots in the system, you too might be a top dog someday.

QuoteI understand that you have been a collapse enthusiast from way back. After waiting for it probably all of this century, your only response is really only "just wait". We have been.

And collapse should adhere to your personal schedule why?

I have no requirement at all for a collapse schedule. I only note that incessant claims of it happening, in the past, present or future, are a characteristic of the doomer genre. And religions in general. An interesting correllation itself. I note that collapse is a powerful background driver across nearly all doomer type topics. I only even paid it any attention when I identified it as such a common driver within my area of expertise. Across decades of pushing into the "why" people fell for peak oil, turns out it was an easy answer. It was easily configured to feed a collapse scenario. Much more effective in a modern, interconnected and "educated" world than just pitching The Book of Revelations to the rubes. Koresh and Jim Jones and Heavens Gaters were all doomers, and made such an excellent pitch that people sacrificed themselves to their ideas.

I have no schedule for "collapse" (quotes to designate RE's accepted definition) at all. I am happy to acknowledge that it has happened before (just ask the dinosaurs) and is required to happen again (the Sun is getting lighter by 40 million tons a second). Within these completely reasonable concepts (throw in a decent GRB to if you'd like) there  are these biological organisms living in a thin layer of organic material on the 3rd rock from our particular G-type yellow dwarf star who will be goners one way or another. Humans just seem to have a fascination with the how, why and when, going back millenium. I mark this up to nothing more than a recognition of mortality, both at the individual and species level.

Arguing over collapse is like two fleas arguing about if they can hold their breath longer than the human can stay when they dive into a pond and swim underwater. Just fleas....along for the ride.....

Quote from: K-DogCollapse is inherent in the material conditions of our civilization.  The physics of these conditions determines how, and how fast collapse will play out.  It is certainly not subject to our whims.

Not just our civilization. And of course the physics. Peak oil will follow physics as well, the enthusiasts just never understood what, if anything, bell shaped curves had to do with it.
