Just returned from a trip, Edmontonish area up to lloydminister, into Saskatchewan and back today. No snow, brown grass everywhere. Stepped outside to let the dogs in and it is now raining outside. Crazy, just crazy. It looks like things are the same down south  http://www.smirkingchimp.com/thread/rivera-sun/108895/the-winter-without-snow-a-wake-up-call

How do the mountains look this time of year? Always thought Edmonton was an okay town, but flat, and Lloydminister the same and more rurally. I've seen the most beautiful northern lights there on a cold evening in January once, heading west out of Saskatchewan towards the real gems.Given a choice its the Rockys from the US border until it hits Fairbanks...and then you skip up to the Brooks Range and the beauty continues.

Mountains are to far west for me to see. You might think Edmonton is flat but you don't know flat until you have driven across Saskatchewan.

From Weyburn to Saskatoon to Llyodminster headed to Edmonton. Lived there for a year. Ran off to the mountains every chance I got. Fort Nelson and from there on to Alaska a couple times.

Saskatchewan doesn't have all that much on Cheyenne to Chicago, except Canadians are nicer folks along the way. Golf courses, Chinese restaurants and Dairy Queens still a thing in every small town out that way?

Yes, it is all much the same, in some towns the local hooker is still a virgin.

RE
I am sure it is a good tool but I don't split my wood, used to, then got smart and let my wood dry all bucked up for 3 years. It really takes that long for a unsplit log of poplar to dry, but once dry it burns up just fine. I also don't cut logs bigger in diameter than the opening of my wood stove.

Now winter has come, -20C with -40s forecast for this week. A blizzard outside, needless to say but the wood stove is lit and pounding out the btu's.

January is about over, the forecast has us going well above 0 into feb. There isn't enough snow to cover a boot and I have burnt a touch less than a cord of wood this winter and about 3/4 a barrel of diesel for my air heater. All in all this is the mildest winter I can remember.

Atmospheric CO2:

December 2023     421.86 ppm
December 2022     418.99 ppm

Annual change:  +0.68%

The mildest winter you can remember.  Do you have any idea of why that might be?

I will just assume your question is rhetorical.

I can't believe this winter, it is January, the little snow we had is melting and running down my driveway while I am under the hood of my F150 changing plugs and coil packs without a jacket or gloves on.

I had started building a motor control for my front gate last year, just because it was so warm out I decided to see if I could trench power out to it with a pick axe. First 2 inches, sometimes 3 inches were froze, after that the axe went in like it was cutting threw butter. Incredible, just incredible did not ever think I would live to see such a thing, oh I know it was coming just thought I would run out of life before seeing it. Alberta was known for it's  cold winters so this really is something to see. I have brush piles to burn but I don't dare try to, do to the danger of a grass fire.
